The Classic Patty Melt is a delicious diner favorite featuring a juicy beef patty, melted Swiss cheese, and caramelized onions, all sandwiched between golden, buttery rye bread. This savory, cheesy sandwich is perfect for lunch or dinner!

Ingredients

Scale

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter, divided
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 tbsp mayonnaise (for toasting)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions:
    • In a large skillet, heat 1 tbsp of butter and 1 tbsp of olive oil over medium heat.
    • Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes, or until the onions are golden brown and caramelized.
    • Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
  2. Form and Cook the Beef Patties:
    • Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and shape into thin patties, slightly larger than the bread slices (they will shrink during cooking).
    • Season both sides of the patties with salt and pepper.
    • In the same skillet, cook the patties over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through.
    • Add the Worcestershire sauce during the last minute of cooking for added flavor. Set the patties aside.
  3. Assemble the Patty Melts:
    • Lay out 4 slices of rye bread and top each with 1 slice of Swiss cheese, 1 cooked beef patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of Swiss cheese. Place the remaining bread slices on top.
    • Spread 1 tbsp of mayonnaise on the outside of each bread slice (this helps achieve a crispy, golden crust).
  4. Cook the Sandwiches:
    • In the same skillet, melt the remaining 1 tbsp of butter over medium heat.
    • Add the assembled sandwiches and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  5. Serve:
    • Slice the patty melts in half and serve hot with pickles or your favorite dipping sauce!

Notes

  • Use other cheese: Try American, cheddar, or provolone for a different flavor.
  • Add heat: Add a few slices of jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce for a spicy kick.
  • Storage: Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in a skillet for best results.
