Units
Scale
Â
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter, divided
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 8 slices rye bread
- 8 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 tbsp mayonnaise (for toasting)
Instructions
Â
- Caramelize the Onions:
- In a large skillet, heat 1 tbsp of butter and 1 tbsp of olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes, or until the onions are golden brown and caramelized.
- Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
- Form and Cook the Beef Patties:
- Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and shape into thin patties, slightly larger than the bread slices (they will shrink during cooking).
- Season both sides of the patties with salt and pepper.
- In the same skillet, cook the patties over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through.
- Add the Worcestershire sauce during the last minute of cooking for added flavor. Set the patties aside.
- Assemble the Patty Melts:
- Lay out 4 slices of rye bread and top each with 1 slice of Swiss cheese, 1 cooked beef patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of Swiss cheese. Place the remaining bread slices on top.
- Spread 1 tbsp of mayonnaise on the outside of each bread slice (this helps achieve a crispy, golden crust).
- Cook the Sandwiches:
- In the same skillet, melt the remaining 1 tbsp of butter over medium heat.
- Add the assembled sandwiches and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Serve:
- Slice the patty melts in half and serve hot with pickles or your favorite dipping sauce!
Notes
Â
- Use other cheese: Try American, cheddar, or provolone for a different flavor.
- Add heat: Add a few slices of jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce for a spicy kick.
- Storage: Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in a skillet for best results.
