Description

The Classic Italian Muffuletta Sandwich is a bold and hearty New Orleans favorite layered with Italian cold cuts, provolone cheese, and a tangy olive salad, all packed into a round Italian loaf.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 round Italian bread loaf (about 10 inches)
  • 1 cup olive salad (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/4 lb sliced Genoa salami
  • 1/4 lb sliced ham
  • 1/4 lb sliced mortadella or capicola
  • 1/4 lb sliced provolone cheese
  • 1/4 lb sliced mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (optional, for brushing bread)

Instructions

  1. Slice the Italian loaf in half horizontally. Scoop out some of the soft bread from the center to make room for the filling, if desired.
  2. Spread half of the olive salad on the bottom half of the bread.
  3. Layer the salami, ham, mortadella, provolone, and mozzarella evenly over the olive salad.
  4. Top the meats and cheeses with the remaining olive salad.
  5. Place the top half of the bread over the filling and press down gently.
  6. Wrap the sandwich tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (up to overnight) to allow flavors to meld.
  7. Cut into wedges and serve chilled or at room temperature.

Notes

  • For the best flavor, let the sandwich rest before serving.
  • You can make your own olive salad with chopped green and black olives, giardiniera, garlic, and herbs mixed with olive oil and vinegar.
  • Use a crusty, firm Italian bread to hold up to the juicy filling.
