For the Pretzel Dough:
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
For the Baking Soda Bath:
- 6 cups water
- 1/3 cup baking soda
For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
Optional Dipping Sauce:
- Cream cheese frosting or caramel sauce
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough:
In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy. Stir in salt and melted butter. Gradually add flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size. - Shape the Pretzels:
Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12-16 pieces. Roll each piece into a long, thin stick about 6-8 inches long. - Baking Soda Bath:
Bring 6 cups of water and baking soda to a boil in a large pot. Working in batches, drop the pretzel sticks into the boiling water for 20-30 seconds. Remove with a slotted spoon and place them on the prepared baking sheets. - Bake the Pretzels:
Bake the pretzel sticks for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown. - Add the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:
In a small bowl, mix granulated sugar and cinnamon. Brush each pretzel stick with melted butter, then roll them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until well coated. - Serve:
Serve the pretzel sticks warm with your choice of dipping sauce, such as cream cheese frosting or caramel sauce.
Notes
- If you prefer a crunchier pretzel, bake for an additional 2-3 minutes.
- Add a pinch of salt to the cinnamon sugar mixture for a sweet and salty twist.
- These pretzels are best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated in the oven at 300°F for 5-7 minutes.
