Description

These bite-sized churro poppers are crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and coated in cinnamon sugar. Perfect for dipping in chocolate or caramel sauce, they make a delightful treat for any occasion!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

For the Coating:

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

For Frying:

  • 2 cups vegetable oil (or enough for frying)

Optional Dipping Sauces:

  • Chocolate sauce
  • Caramel sauce

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough:

    • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine water, butter, sugar, and salt. Bring to a boil.
    • Reduce the heat to low and stir in the flour. Cook and stir continuously until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan, about 2 minutes.
    • Remove from heat and let the dough cool for 5 minutes.
  2. Add eggs and vanilla:

    • Transfer the dough to a mixing bowl. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, until the dough is smooth and shiny. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. Heat the oil:

    • In a deep skillet or saucepan, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to maintain the temperature.
  4. Fry the poppers:

    • Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a round or star tip. Pipe 1-inch pieces of dough into the hot oil, using scissors to cut the dough as you pipe.
    • Fry the poppers in small batches for 3–4 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  5. Coat in cinnamon sugar:

    • In a shallow bowl, mix granulated sugar and cinnamon. Toss the warm poppers in the mixture until evenly coated.
  6. Serve:

    • Serve the churro poppers warm with your favorite dipping sauces like chocolate or caramel.

Notes

  • For a baked version, pipe the dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 15–20 minutes, or until golden.
  • Leftovers can be reheated in an air fryer or oven to restore crispiness.
  • Add a pinch of nutmeg or a splash of orange zest to the dough for a unique flavor twist.
