Description

Chicken Jalfrezi is a popular Indian curry dish made with marinated chicken stir-fried with bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, and spices for a rich, flavorful, and mildly spicy meal.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb boneless chicken breast or thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 inch piece of ginger, minced
  • 2 green chilies, sliced (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the chicken pieces and cook until lightly browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same pan, add onions, garlic, and ginger. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until softened.
  4. Add the bell peppers and cook for another 2-3 minutes until slightly tender.
  5. Stir in the chopped tomatoes and green chilies (if using), and cook until the tomatoes break down slightly.
  6. Add cumin, coriander, turmeric, garam masala, chili powder, and salt. Mix well.
  7. Return the cooked chicken to the pan and stir to coat with the spice mixture. Cook for another 5-7 minutes to blend flavors.
  8. Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot with rice or naan.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, marinate the chicken in yogurt and spices for 30 minutes before cooking.
  • Adjust the chili to your preferred spice level.
  • This dish can be made ahead and reheated for even better flavor the next day.
