Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 cup mushrooms, finely chopped
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp ground cumin
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese
- 4 pita breads, halved
- 1 cup tzatziki sauce
- Chopped lettuce and tomatoes for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onions and garlic and sauté for 2–3 minutes until soft.
- Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
- Stir in mushrooms, oregano, cumin, salt, and pepper. Cook until mushrooms are tender and any moisture has evaporated.
- Stir in shredded cheese and mix until melted and combined with the beef mixture.
- Warm pita breads slightly and open pockets.
- Fill each pita half with beef and mushroom mixture, then top with a spoonful of tzatziki sauce.
- Add lettuce and tomato if using, and serve immediately.
Notes
- Use Greek yogurt-based tzatziki for a tangy, refreshing contrast to the savory filling.
- For a vegetarian version, replace beef with lentils or plant-based meat.
- Can be prepped ahead and assembled just before serving for quick lunches.
