Scale
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter (or olive oil)
- 1 tsp sugar (optional, to aid caramelization)
- 1 tsp salt, divided
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise (or Greek yogurt for lighter option)
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
- 1 tsp fresh lemon juice
- Optional garnish: chopped chives or parsley
Instructions
- In a large skillet, melt butter over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions, ½ tsp salt, and sugar if using.
- Cook onions slowly, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden brown, about 25–30 minutes. Adjust heat if edges brown too quickly.
- Season onions with remaining salt and black pepper, stir, and remove from heat. Let cool to room temperature.
- In a bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, and lemon juice.
- Fold in cooled caramelized onions until well mixed.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or up to overnight) to let flavors meld.
- Before serving, stir and garnish with chopped chives or parsley. Pair with chips, crackers, pita, or fresh veggies.
Notes
- Slow cooking is key—allow onions to brown without burning for best flavor.
- Make-ahead friendly: flavors improve after refrigerating overnight.
- Swap mayonnaise for Greek yogurt to reduce calories and add tang.
- For deeper flavor, deglaze pan with a splash of white wine or balsamic vinegar before cooling onions.
- Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
