- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 large apple (such as Granny Smith), thinly sliced
- 1/2 tsp thyme (optional)
- 1/2 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- All-purpose flour, for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add onions, sugar, and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized (about 15–20 minutes). Set aside.
- On a floured surface, roll out puff pastry to a rectangle and place on baking sheet. Score a 1/2-inch border and prick the center with a fork.
- Spread caramelized onions evenly within the border. Layer with apple slices and sprinkle with thyme, salt, and pepper.
- Top with shredded cheddar cheese.
- Brush the border with beaten egg.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until golden and puffed.
- Cool slightly before slicing and serving.
