Description

This caramelized onion, apple, and cheddar tart is a sweet and savory puff pastry delight, featuring rich onions, tart apples, and sharp cheddar—perfect for brunch, a light lunch, or appetizer.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 large apple (such as Granny Smith), thinly sliced
  • 1/2 tsp thyme (optional)
  • 1/2 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • All-purpose flour, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add onions, sugar, and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized (about 15–20 minutes). Set aside.
  3. On a floured surface, roll out puff pastry to a rectangle and place on baking sheet. Score a 1/2-inch border and prick the center with a fork.
  4. Spread caramelized onions evenly within the border. Layer with apple slices and sprinkle with thyme, salt, and pepper.
  5. Top with shredded cheddar cheese.
  6. Brush the border with beaten egg.
  7. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until golden and puffed.
  8. Cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline for evenly thin apple slices.
  • Add a drizzle of honey or balsamic glaze for extra depth.
  • Try mixing in a bit of blue cheese or goat cheese for variation.
