The tender, spiced apples are enveloped in a flaky crust and topped with a luscious caramel drizzle. Perfect for holidays, gatherings, or any time you crave a comforting and sweet dessert!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Pie Filling:

  • 6 cups sliced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well)
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup (50 g) brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

For the Crust:

  • 1 package (14 oz) refrigerated pie crusts (2 crusts)
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for sprinkling)

For the Caramel Sauce: (Optional)

  • 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) heavy cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

🍏 Prepare the Apple Filling:

  1. Mix the Apples:

    • In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, lemon juice, and flour.
    • Toss to coat the apples evenly.
  2. Add Caramel Sauce:

    • Drizzle 1/4 cup of caramel sauce over the apple mixture and stir gently.

🥧 Prepare the Pie Crust:

  1. Preheat Oven:

    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Assemble the Bottom Crust:

    • Roll out one pie crust and fit it into a 9-inch (23 cm) pie dish.
    • Trim any excess dough hanging over the edges.
  3. Fill the Pie:

    • Pour the apple filling into the pie crust, spreading it evenly.

🥟 Top the Pie:

  1. Add the Top Crust:

    • Roll out the second crust and place it over the apples.
    • Trim and crimp the edges to seal, or create a lattice design if desired.
  2. Prepare for Baking:

    • Brush the top crust with the beaten egg and sprinkle with granulated sugar.
    • Cut a few slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.

🔥 Bake the Pie:

  1. Bake:

    • Place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any drips.
    • Bake for 45-50 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  2. Cool Slightly:

    • Let the pie cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before serving.

🍮 Make the Caramel Sauce (Optional):

  1. Melt Sugar:

    • In a saucepan, heat sugar over medium heat, stirring constantly until it melts into a smooth amber-colored liquid.
  2. Add Butter:

    • Stir in butter until fully melted.
  3. Add Cream:

    • Slowly whisk in heavy cream (the mixture will bubble up).
    • Stir until smooth, then add salt.
    • Let cool slightly before drizzling over the pie.

🍽️ Serve:

  1. Drizzle and Enjoy:

    • Drizzle the pie with extra caramel sauce before serving.
  2. Serving Suggestions:

    • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Notes

  • Prevent a Soggy Crust: Blind bake the bottom crust for 10 minutes before adding the filling for a crisper base.
  • Make It Ahead: You can prepare the pie filling and refrigerate it up to 1 day in advance.
  • Storage: Store leftover pie at room temperature for 2 days, or refrigerate for up to 4 days.
