Description

Black Icing Buttercream Frosting is a rich and creamy frosting perfect for decorating cakes, cupcakes, or cookies with a bold, deep black color and smooth texture.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably dark or black cocoa)
  • 23 tablespoons milk or heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Black gel food coloring (as needed)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth and creamy, about 2-3 minutes.
  2. Add the cocoa powder and mix until fully combined.
  3. Gradually add powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low and then increasing to medium speed.
  4. Add vanilla extract, salt, and 2 tablespoons of milk or cream, then beat until smooth and fluffy. Add more milk if needed for desired consistency.
  5. Add black gel food coloring a little at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition, until a deep black color is achieved.
  6. Let the frosting sit for 30 minutes; the color will deepen over time. Stir before using.

Notes

  • Using dark or black cocoa helps achieve a richer black color with less food coloring.
  • Black gel food coloring is more concentrated than liquid and provides better results.
  • Make ahead of time to allow the color to develop fully.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Bring to room temperature before using.
