Description

This Black Forest Trifle is a decadent layered dessert featuring moist chocolate cake, creamy whipped layers, cherries, and chocolate shavings. Inspired by the classic Black Forest Cake, it’s perfect for special occasions and is as beautiful as it is delicious.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the trifle:

  • 1 (9-inch/23 cm) chocolate cake (store-bought or homemade), cut into cubes
  • 2 cups (480 ml) cherry pie filling or pitted fresh cherries
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) cherry liqueur or juice (optional)
  • 2 cups (480 ml) heavy whipping cream
  • 1/3 cup (40 g) powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup (30 g) chocolate shavings or grated chocolate

For garnish:

  • Fresh cherries
  • Additional chocolate shavings

Instructions

  1. Prepare the whipped cream:

    • In a large mixing bowl, beat the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the cake:

    • If using homemade cake, bake and cool it beforehand. Cut the cake into bite-sized cubes. Optionally, drizzle the cubes with cherry liqueur or juice for extra flavor.
  3. Assemble the trifle:

    • In a trifle dish or a large glass bowl, layer 1/3 of the chocolate cake cubes at the bottom. Top with 1/3 of the cherry pie filling and then 1/3 of the whipped cream. Sprinkle a layer of chocolate shavings over the whipped cream.
    • Repeat the layers two more times, finishing with a layer of whipped cream on top.
  4. Garnish:

    • Decorate the trifle with fresh cherries and additional chocolate shavings.
  5. Chill and serve:

    • Refrigerate the trifle for at least 2 hours before serving to let the flavors meld. Serve chilled.

Notes

  • Make-ahead: This trifle can be assembled up to a day in advance. Add the garnish just before serving for the freshest appearance.
  • Variations: Use brownies or chocolate cookies in place of cake for a different texture.
  • Alcohol-free: Omit the cherry liqueur and use cherry juice or syrup from the pie filling instead.
