Ingredients

Units Scale

(Serves 4)

For the Beef:

  • 1 lb (450 g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil (for cooking)

For the Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup beef broth (or water)
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 tsp cornstarch

For the Stir-Fry:

  • 2 cups broccoli florets
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp ginger, minced (optional, for extra flavor)
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

For Serving:

  • Steamed rice or noodles
  • Sesame seeds and sliced green onions (optional)

Instructions

1. Marinate the Beef:

  1. In a bowl, toss the sliced beef with 1 tbsp soy sauce and 1 tbsp cornstarch. Set aside for 10-15 minutes while preparing the other ingredients.

2. Make the Sauce:

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, beef broth, oyster sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, and cornstarch. Set aside.

3. Cook the Broccoli:

  1. Heat 1 tbsp of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the broccoli florets and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes, until bright green and slightly tender. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

4. Sear the Beef:

  1. In the same skillet, heat another 1 tbsp of vegetable oil. Add the marinated beef in a single layer.
  2. Sear for 1-2 minutes per side until browned and just cooked through. Remove the beef and set aside.

5. Combine Everything:

  1. Reduce the heat to medium and add the garlic (and ginger, if using) to the skillet. Sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  2. Pour the sauce into the skillet and stir until it begins to thicken, about 1 minute.
  3. Return the beef and broccoli to the skillet, tossing to coat in the sauce. Cook for 1-2 more minutes until heated through.

6. Serve:

  1. Serve the beef and broccoli over steamed rice or noodles.
  2. Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions, if desired.

Notes

  • Prep Ahead: Have all ingredients sliced and measured before starting, as stir-fries cook quickly.
  • Tender Beef: Freeze the beef for 10-15 minutes before slicing for thin, even pieces.
  • Vegetarian Option: Replace beef with tofu or mushrooms and use vegetable broth instead of beef broth.
