Description

This easy homemade playdough is soft, non-toxic, and lasts for weeks! Perfect for kids, it’s made with simple ingredients you likely already have at home. Customize with colors and scents for extra fun!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (240ml) salt
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or coconut oil)
  • 1 1/2 cups (360ml) water
  • Food coloring (liquid or gel)
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or a few drops of essential oil (for scent)

Instructions

1. Mix the Dry Ingredients:
  1. In a large saucepan, combine the flour, salt, and cream of tartar. Mix well.
2. Add the Wet Ingredients:
  1. Stir in the water, vegetable oil, and food coloring. If using a scent, add it now. Mix until smooth.
3. Cook the Dough:
  1. Place the saucepan over medium heat. Cook the mixture, stirring constantly, until it thickens and forms a ball (about 2–3 minutes).
  2. Remove from heat when the dough pulls away from the sides of the pan and is no longer sticky.
4. Knead the Dough:
  1. Let the dough cool slightly, then transfer it to a clean surface.
  2. Knead the dough for 1–2 minutes until smooth and soft. If it’s still sticky, add a small amount of flour while kneading.
5. Store:
  • Store the playdough in an airtight container or zip-top bag. It will stay fresh for up to 2 months at room temperature.

Tips for Customization

  • Colors: Divide the dough and knead in different food colorings for a variety of hues.
  • Textures: Add glitter or sand for sensory fun.
  • Scents: Use extracts like peppermint, lemon, or almond for a fragrant experience.

Notes

  • Cream of tartar helps make the playdough softer and longer-lasting, but if unavailable, you can substitute it with 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar.
  • If the playdough dries out, knead in a few drops of water to restore its softness.
