Description

Tender and flavorful steamed artichokes served with a simple dipping sauce — a classic appetizer or side dish that’s easy to prepare and fun to eat.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 large artichokes
  • 1 lemon, halved
  • 2 cloves garlic, smashed
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1/4 cup melted butter or your favorite dipping sauce

Instructions

  1. Fill a large pot with about 2 inches of water. Add lemon halves, smashed garlic, bay leaves, and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil.
  2. Meanwhile, trim the artichokes by cutting off the top inch and snipping the sharp tips from the leaves. Trim the stem if needed.
  3. Place a steaming basket or insert into the pot and add the artichokes, stem-side up.
  4. Cover and steam for 30-40 minutes, or until the outer leaves can be easily pulled off and the base is tender.
  5. Remove artichokes from the pot and allow to cool slightly.
  6. Serve warm with melted butter or your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • To eat, pull off leaves, dip the base in sauce, and scrape the soft flesh with your teeth.
  • When you reach the center, remove the fuzzy choke to enjoy the tender heart.
  • Leftover artichokes can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
