Ingredients
Scale
For the Biscuits:
- 1 can refrigerated biscuits (8 large buttermilk or flaky biscuits)
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
For the Apple Filling:
- 4 medium apples, peeled, cored, and chopped (or 1 can apple pie filling, chopped)
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (if using fresh apples)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
For the Glaze:
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
-
Preheat Oven and Prepare Skillet:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 10-12 inch cast iron skillet or baking dish with a bit of the melted butter.
-
Make the Apple Filling:
- In a saucepan, combine the chopped apples, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch. Cook over medium heat, stirring often, until the apples are soft and the mixture thickens (about 10-12 minutes). Stir in vanilla extract and set aside.
-
Prepare the Biscuits:
- In a small bowl, mix the granulated sugar and cinnamon.
- Dip each biscuit in the melted butter, then coat with the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Arrange the coated biscuits in the skillet.
-
Assemble and Bake:
- Spoon the apple filling evenly over the top of the biscuits. Pour any remaining melted butter over the top.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.
-
Make the Glaze:
- In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla until smooth. Drizzle over the warm biscuits.
-
Serve:
- Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
- Using Canned Filling: If using canned apple pie filling, simply chop the apples into smaller pieces and skip the cornstarch.
- Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat before serving.
