- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 2 cups peeled and chopped apples (about 2 medium apples)
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture in three parts, alternating with sour cream, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Fold in the chopped apples and nuts if using.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- You can use a mix of sweet and tart apples for a more complex flavor.
- Serve with a dusting of powdered sugar or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
