Proof Yeast: In a large bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let stand for about 10 minutes, until frothy.
Mix Dough: To the yeast mixture, add salt and oil. Mix in flour one cup at a time. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth.
First Rise: Place the dough in a well-oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
Punch and Shape: Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough in half and shape each half into a loaf. Place the loaves into two lightly greased 9×5 inch loaf pans.
Second Rise: Cover the loaves and let them rise again for about 30 minutes, or until the dough has risen 1 inch above the pans.
Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the loaves for about 30 minutes, or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
Cool: Remove the bread from the pans and let cool on wire racks.
