Description

Amish Broccoli Salad is a classic, crunchy side dish featuring fresh broccoli, crispy bacon, cheddar cheese, and a tangy-sweet dressing. It’s perfect for potlucks, picnics, or as a flavorful addition to any meal.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Serves 6-8

  • For the salad:
    • 6 cups (450 g) fresh broccoli florets, chopped into bite-sized pieces
    • 1/2 cup (75 g) red onion, finely diced
    • 1/2 cup (75 g) shredded or diced cheddar cheese
    • 1/4 cup (35 g) sunflower seeds or chopped almonds (optional)
    • 6 slices cooked bacon, crumbled
  • For the dressing:
    • 1 cup (240 ml) mayonnaise
    • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
    • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  • Prepare the dressing:
    • In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sugar, and apple cider vinegar until smooth. Adjust the sweetness or tanginess to taste.
  • Assemble the salad:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the broccoli florets, red onion, cheddar cheese, sunflower seeds (if using), and crumbled bacon.
  • Toss with dressing:
    • Pour the dressing over the salad and toss until the ingredients are evenly coated.
  • Chill and serve:
    • Cover and refrigerate the salad for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld. Serve cold.

Notes

  • For extra sweetness, add 1/4 cup (40 g) of raisins or dried cranberries.
  • Use Greek yogurt or a mix of yogurt and mayonnaise for a lighter version of the dressing.
  • The salad can be prepared a few hours in advance but is best enjoyed within 24 hours for maximum freshness.
